Sound Design & Synthesis
This program is a comprehensive journey into sound design and synthesis, designed for aspiring producers, electronic musicians, and composers. Students learn how sound works, how to shape it using modern synthesizers, and how to apply advanced techniques to produce professional-quality audio. Every module focuses on hands-on application, with students creating real sounds, textures, and effects immediately. By the end of the course, participants can design original synth patches, manipulate sound dynamically, and integrate their creations into polished productions or live performances.
Course Details
Summary
The Sound Design & Synthesis course is a structured, hands-on program designed for producers, musicians, and creators who want to fully understand how sound is generated, shaped, and transformed in modern music production. Throughout the course, students explore synthesis from both a technical and creative perspective, learning how oscillators, filters, envelopes, and modulation systems interact to build sounds from scratch. The program focuses on real application, allowing students to create leads, basses, pads, textures, and effects while developing a deep understanding of how professional sounds are crafted. Students will work with both software and hardware synthesizers, gaining experience in modulation routing, sound shaping, and effects processing. The course also emphasizes workflow, helping students build their own sound libraries and integrate custom sounds into music production or live performance. By the end of the course, students will have the skills and confidence to design original sounds, control sonic movement, and apply sound design techniques in a professional and creative context.
Payment Plan
The course tuition can be split into the following payments:
- $200 — Seat reservation
- $160 — First session
Curriculum
Tap each module to expand.
Module 1 — The Science of Sound
Physics of audio and perception: frequency, amplitude, timbre, harmonics, acoustics, psychoacoustics, and critical listening to identify tonal and spatial characteristics.
Module 2 — Foundations of Synthesis
Core principles: waveform generation, signal flow, amplitude modulation, and envelope shaping so students understand how synth components form complete sounds.
Module 3 — Evolution of Synthesizers
History from early analog to modern digital/hybrid systems. Explore iconic synths and technologies to understand how design choices shape tone and workflow.
Module 4 — Oscillators: Building the Core Sound
Manipulate waveform shapes, detune, phase, and layering. Practice designing leads, basses, and pads by combining oscillator layers.
Module 5 — Filters & Tone Shaping
Low-pass/high-pass/band-pass/notch filters, cutoff/resonance/slope, filter envelopes, modulation, and automation to transform raw tones into expressive patches.
Module 6 — Amplifiers & Dynamics
Gain stages, amplitude envelopes, distortion, compression, and overdrive—how dynamics shape energy, presence, and character so sounds sit effectively in a mix.
Module 7 — Envelopes: Controlling Motion Over Time
Attack/decay/sustain/release applied to amplitude, filters, and modulation. Create percussive hits, evolving pads, and expressive leads.
Module 8 — LFOs & Rhythmic Modulation
LFO shapes, rates, sync options and modulation targets (pitch/filter/amp/effects). Create wobbling basses, pulsing synths, and evolving textures.
Module 9 — Synthesizer Settings & Preset Management
Workflow mastery: parameter navigation, saving/recalling patches, organizing libraries, and adapting settings quickly while keeping creative control.
Module 10 — Virtual Instruments & VST Mastery
Harness VST synths and plugin environments: navigation, mapping, automation, and DAW integration. Recreate classic sounds and customize presets.
Module 11 — Hardware Synthesizers: Hands-On Practice
Apply software concepts to real hardware: signal flow, patch creation, and performance techniques on analog and digital synths.
Module 12 — Modulation & Matrix Routing
Create complex evolving sounds using modulation sources and matrix routing—map envelopes/LFOs/velocity/controllers to multiple destinations for expressive patches.
Module 13 — MIDI & Audio Routing for Sound Design
DAW workflow: route MIDI, control multiple synths, and integrate audio for effects processing. Build flexible setups for production and live contexts.
Module 14 — Design Thinking: Crafting Original Sounds
Analyze references, conceptualize textures, and approach patch creation systematically—develop personal sound identity like a professional sound designer.
Module 15 — Effects & Sound Enhancement
Add polish using effects to shape tone, space, and impact. Build evolving effect chains and transform raw patches into production-ready signature textures.
