Summary

The Ableton Live course is a structured, hands-on program designed to help students build a complete and confident workflow inside one of the industry’s most powerful music production environments. Throughout the course, students learn how to navigate Ableton Live efficiently, understand its core concepts, and work fluently in both Session View and Arrangement View. The program covers audio and MIDI recording, editing, warping, routing, virtual instruments, effects processing, automation, and session organization, giving students the practical tools needed to move from creative idea to finished production. The course combines technical understanding with real application, allowing students to explore how clips, tracks, scenes, racks, and devices work together inside a professional project. Students also develop essential workflow habits such as project organization, clean routing, comping, exporting, and performance-ready control using MIDI and key mapping. By the end of the course, students will be able to confidently create, arrange, edit, and export complete tracks inside Ableton Live while building a fast, professional workflow that supports both music production and live performance.

Curriculum

Tap each module to expand.

Module 1 — Overview & Navigation

Become fully comfortable with the Ableton Live interface: Arrangement vs Session View, Control Bar, Browser, Detail View, and Preferences to optimize your setup.

Module 2 — Core Concepts

Understand how tracks, clips and scenes interact, audio vs MIDI, tempo/time signatures, quantization, and signal flow for a strong foundation.

Module 3 — Working with the Browser

Find sounds, instruments, presets, samples and plugins fast. Learn Collections, User Library, importing samples, and managing VST/AU plugins.

Module 4 — Session View

Use Ableton’s non-linear workflow: create/launch clips, build scenes, experiment, and record ideas in real time for creativity and performance.

Module 5 — Arrangement View

Master the timeline: bars/beats display, grid settings, navigating efficiently, editing clips (trim/split/consolidate/duplicate), locators, looping, and track controls.

Module 6 — Clip View

Understand Clip View structure for audio vs MIDI clips, including Clip/Notes/Envelopes tabs and how each section relates to your selected clip.

Module 7 — Audio Clips & Warping

Warp markers, timing correction, tempo matching, changing tempo without pitch issues, and warp modes for corrective + creative workflows.

Module 8 — MIDI Clips & Velocity

Create expressive MIDI performances: edit notes, velocity, timing, groove and swing. Learn MIDI effects and techniques to enhance musical expression.

Module 9 — Converting Audio to MIDI

Convert melodies, harmonies and drums to MIDI, assign instruments, and refine results for accuracy and creative flexibility.

Module 10 — Routing & I/O

Signal flow mastery: audio I/O, MIDI routing, return tracks, sidechain setups, sends, and monitoring modes for advanced control.

Module 11 — Recording Audio & MIDI

Professional recording workflows: track arming, monitoring, latency, punch-in/out, metronome settings, and capturing clean usable takes.

Module 12 — Comping

Manage multiple takes using take lanes, combine best segments, and use comping creatively to merge loops or layer audio.

Module 13 — Stem Separation

Separate mixed audio into vocals/drums/instruments, clean the stems, and repurpose them for remixes or production work.

Module 14 — Working with Instruments & VSTs

Use Ableton instruments and third-party VST/AU plugins: load devices, navigate presets, manage settings, and replace instruments efficiently.

Module 15 — Working with Audio & MIDI Effects

Build effect chains, control parameters, manage device order, and save/recall presets for a fast workflow.

Module 16 — Instrument Rack, Drum Rack & Effect Rack

Create layered setups: multi-layer instrument chains, custom drum kits, powerful effect chains, and macro/chain selector control.

Module 17 — Mixing & The Mixer

Use the mixer: faders, pan, mute/solo, grouping, sends/returns, and how it organizes levels, routing, and overall signal flow.

Module 18 — Automation & Editing Envelopes

Automate volume, effects and parameters to create movement and energy. Draw curves, edit breakpoints, and use track automation + clip envelopes.

Module 20 — Working with Video

Import video, synchronize music or sound design, explore tempo mapping for film, and export audio alongside video.

Module 21 — MIDI & Key Remote Control

Integrate controllers: map knobs/faders/keys, set MIDI and key mapping modes, and create performance-ready control setups.
